Early Life and Education
Mitchell was born in Chicago, Illinois, into a well-educated and artistic family. Her mother, Marion Strobel, was a poet and editor at Poetry magazine, and her father was a dermatologist. Mitchell showed an early interest in art and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, where she earned her BFA in 1947. She later traveled to France on a fellowship and was greatly influenced by European modernism.
Career and Artistic Style
In the early 1950s, Mitchell moved to New York City, where she became part of the Abstract Expressionist movement, mingling with artists like Willem de Kooning and Franz Kline. However, she developed her own distinct style, characterized by sweeping, lyrical brushstrokes and layered compositions that often referenced nature.
Personality and Life
Mitchell was known for her intense personality—she could be fiercely independent, highly intellectual, and at times abrasive. She was deeply passionate about art and had strong opinions about painting. She also struggled with depression and was known for her heavy drinking, which contributed to the myth of the tortured artist. However, she was also deeply generous, maintaining strong friendships with poets and fellow artists.
